Launch conference of the project “Development and management of integrated urban development plans”

The General Urban Plan of Ungheni – a dream coming true

On 3 December 2013, at 12:00, the Citizens’ Information Centre of Ungheni Town Hall hosted the launch conference of the project “Development and management of integrated urban development plans” (MIS-ETC: 2020/73179/30.09.2013). The project is implemented by Ungheni Town Council in partnership with the Iași Metropolitan Area Association (Romania), Novoselytsya District Council (Ukraine) and the Institute for Urban Development (Republic of Moldova). It runs for 12 months and is funded by the European Union through the Joint Operational Programme Romania–Ukraine–Republic of Moldova 2007–2013, with a total budget of EUR 166,085.40 (MDL 2,947,567.42), of which the EU contribution is EUR 149,410.42 and the partners’ contribution EUR 16,674.98.

In his welcome speech, the Mayor of Ungheni, Alexandru Ambros, stressed the importance of the General Urban Plan (GUP) for the socio-economic development of the town and for ensuring its sustainable development. The event was also addressed by the project partners – Liviu Iacob, project officer of the Iași Metropolitan Area Association; Daniela Nicorici, assistant project manager at Novoselytsya District Council; and Veaceslav Bulat, executive director of the Institute for Urban Development – who expressed their commitment to the successful implementation of the project.

The event was attended by Consul Petru Lițiu, head of the Consular Office in Ungheni, who was pleasantly impressed by the local authorities’ initiative in implementing EU-funded projects. He spoke about the General Urban Plan as an essential document for local authorities and citizens, ensuring a sustainable approach to land-use planning and urban development.

“This project comes at a very opportune moment. The current GUP of Ungheni dates from 1996, and a new General Urban Plan is needed. It is encouraging that this project will produce the main regulatory document for the town’s urban development, even if it will not be the final act, since Zonal Urban Plans and Detailed Urban Plans are still required. I very much hope that those who prepare the Ungheni GUP will take a serious approach, so that I can later work on the basis of this important document,” said the town architect of Ungheni, Vlad Savin.

“Thanks to this project, Ungheni will get a new General Urban Plan for the next 12–15 years, developed according to modern urban planning methodologies. The Ungheni GUP will be prepared by specialised national or international firms, in line with the legislation of the Republic of Moldova,” said Veaceslav Bulat, executive director of the Institute for Urban Development.

Participants encouraged the project team in its work, and the team in turn committed to carrying out all activities and achieving the results on time and as efficiently as possible.
